Read our toner comparison guide to identify the best toner for your specific needs and skincare goals.

How to Choose the Right Toner

It can be overwhelming to sort through all the types of skin toners on the market to find the one that’s right for you. To simplify things, choose a toner for your skin type, texture, and concerns. Resist buying whatever is trending unless it also suits your skin.

Which Thayers Toner Is Right for Your Skin?

Thayers offers a wide variety of toners that purify and prep the skin. To help you easily find your perfect toner, we’ve created the chart below.

How to Use and Layer Toner Products

Toners should always be applied after cleansing but before using serums or moisturizers. Applying toner in this order allows it to remove any oil, makeup, dirt, and other impurities that didn’t get washed away during cleansing. The only exception to this order is if you use any of our facial mists, which can be spritzed on throughout the day to refresh the skin.

Most of our types of skin toners are bottled, which means they can be applied with a cotton ball, pad, or with your palms for targeted absorption. If you want a midday refresh, a light mist is a great addition to your routine.

Key Benefits & Ingredients of Unscented Facial Toner

Thayers Unscented Facial Toner gives you all the benefits of toner — visibly smaller pores, more even skin tone, smoother texture, etc. — in a gentler, fragrance-free, alcohol-free formula. Rich in soothing aloe and hydrating glycerin, it’s ideal for ultra-sensitive or reactive skin.

Blemish Clearing 2% BHA Toner

Acne hates to see this toner coming. If you experience constant breakouts, consider adding Thayers Blemish Clearing 2% BHA Toner to your routine.

Key Benefits & Ingredients of Blemish Clearing 2% BHA Toner

Among all the types of toner, this one fits the exfoliant category, making it fantastic for treating acne. It’s made with salicylic acid, a known blemish fighter that penetrates deep within the pores to clear congestion, plus purifying witch hazel and soothing aloe. Look no further than this toner for gentle exfoliation on acne-prone skin.

A bottle of Thayers Hydrating Milky Toner

Hydrating Milky Toner

Yes, toners can be hydrating. Thayers Hydrating Milky Toner is the prime example of this because it removes impurities while delivering hydration.

Key Benefits & Ingredients of Hydrating Milky Toner

This milky face toner strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier. Key ingredients hyaluronic acid and snow mushroom draw moisture to the skin’s surface, promoting deep hydration. It’s one of our best toners for dry skin and mature skin.

Cucumber Facial Toner

Some food for your skin: Thayers Cucumber Facial Toner, one of our best toners for sensitive skin. Its key ingredient, cucumber extract, hydrates, soothes, and calms the skin.

Key Benefits & Ingredients of Cucumber Facial Toner

In addition to cucumber extract, this toner contains aloe, another ingredient known for hydrating, soothing, and calming the skin. Irritated, sun-exposed skin will find our Cucumber Facial Toner especially beneficial.

Exfoliating 2% AHA Toner

If you’re looking for an exfoliant that’s gentler than our 2% BHA Toner, then Thayers Exfoliating 2% AHA Toner is for you. It accelerates cell turnover, smooths texture, and makes pores look smaller.

Key Benefits & Ingredients of Exfoliating 2% AHA Toner

The 2% AHA in this face toner is a blend of glycolic, mandelic, and lactic acids, which work together to gently exfoliate the skin’s surface. As the acids exfoliate, they remove dead skin cells to brighten dull, textured skin

Lavender Facial Toner

Another one of our scented toners, Thayers Lavender Facial Toner purifies and preps the skin with the bonus of calming irritation and smelling lovely.

Key Benefits & Ingredients of Lavender Facial Toner

This skin toner combines a hydrating base with calming lavender flower water. It’s a wonderful addition to a nighttime skincare regimen or a routine for dry or stressed skin.

Original Facial Toner

You can’t forget about the classics when shopping for types of skin toners. Thayers Original Facial Toner is one of our best face toners.

Key Benefits & Ingredients of Original Facial Toner

This toner slays at balancing normal to combination skin. It is made with Thayers’ famous formula, a proprietary fusion of locally grown witch hazel, aloe vera, and glycerin.

This skin toner pairs ultra-hydrating coconut water with soothing aloe. Use it to quench thirsty skin or refresh skin post-workout.

Original Witch Hazel Astringent

We couldn’t leave Thayers Original Witch Hazel Astringent off this guide. Our gentle, pH-balanced astringent reduces excess oil while being gentle on the skin.

Key Benefits & Ingredients of Original Witch Hazel Astringent

Witch hazel’s high amount of tannins — substances that absorb oil — allows it to function as a light astringent. In oily skin, witch hazel helps regulate sebum production and provides a refreshing finish.

FAQs About Thayers Toners

  • Yes, you can use more than one Thayers toner in your routine. You can layer your toners from lightest to thickest, alternate your types of toner, or use different toners for zoning. For example, if you have combination skin, you can use a hydrating toner on your cheeks and an oil-control toner on your T-zone.
  • To know which skin toner is best for you, evaluate your skin type and concerns, and refer to our comparison guide and product sections. If you’ve got dry skin and want to hydrate it, some excellent types of skin toners for you are our Hydrating Milky Toner and Coconut Water Facial Toner.
  • You can use most Thayers face toners every day because the vast majority of our toners are gentle enough for daily use. When using any of our exfoliating toners, start with a single application once or twice a week to avoid irritation. You can gradually increase usage as soon as your skin develops a tolerance to it.
  • Besides the presence of alcohol, alcohol-free toners and alcohol-based toners differ in terms of gentleness. Toners without alcohol tend to be less harsh and drying on the skin than toners with alcohol. All of Thayers’ types of toner are alcohol-free, maintain skin hydration, and protect the skin barrier for improved moisture retention.
  • To see results from toner, we recommend using toner consistently for 2-4 weeks. In that time, you should be able to notice improvements in hydration, clarity, or calmness. So, practice patience while awaiting results and be consistent with your applications, whether that’s twice daily, every night, or a few times a week.
  • Milky Toner is better for hydration than rose toner is. Milky Toner is made with two powerful humectants — hyaluronic acid and snow mushroom — which draw moisture to the skin’s surface from the air and deep within the skin’s layers. Although not as hydrating as Milky Toner, Rose Toner can refresh the skin for a healthy glow and prep it for skincare.

  • The difference between Thayers Blemish Clearing Toner and Exfoliating 2% AHA Toner lies in the way each one exfoliates. Thayers Blemish Clearing Toner clears breakouts with BHA, a type of exfoliant that cleans out pores by deeply penetrating the skin. Thayers Exfoliating 2% AHA Toner uses AHA, which smooths out and brightens skin by gently exfoliating surface cells.

  • The best Thayers face toner for dull skin tone is any of our toners with hydrating or exfoliating actives, such as our Hydrating Milky Toner and our Exfoliating 2% AHA Toner. Our Hydrating Milky Toner contains hyaluronic acid and snow mushroom, which are known for promoting deep hydration. Our Exfoliating 2% AHA Toner dissolves dead skin cells to brighten skin.
  • For calming skin, you can’t go wrong with either types of toner: Thayers Lavender Toner or Thayers Cucumber Toner. Both are equally good at calming skin, but our Lavender Toner has a soothing floral scent and offers more hydration, whereas our Cucumber Toner is more cooling. Ultimately, the best one for you will be based on preference and skin sensitivity.
