Experience home-grown healing power with THAYERS® Original Astringent. This gentle astringent is derived from a time-honored formula, developed by Thayers to cleanse, tone, moisturize, and balance the pH level of skin. In addition to containing certified organic Aloe Vera, this unique, proprietary blend also contains certified organic, non-distilled Witch Hazel that’s grown exclusively for Thayers on a family farm in Fairfield County, Connecticut. By avoiding distillation of our Witch Hazel, we’re able to preserve the naturally-occurring, beneficial tannins, which are known to offer antioxidant and antibacterial benefits, and bring about a natural glow. Thayers elixirs have been a fixture in medicine cabinets for generations – once you use them, you’ll know why.

After only 3 or 4 days of using these pads twice a day, the texture of my skin has changed and the ongoing breakouts have lessened tremendously. My skin would normally get super dried out after such a regiment, but its glowing. These pads are great too, not only because they’re convenient, but because they provide a little texture for a light exfoliation. Not too much…just enough…Dermalogica products and facials never gave me these kinds of results. I’m super happy.

Love these astringent pads. They always seem to get the dirt I can’t see. Leave my skin feeling refreshed. Doesn’t leave skin feeling dried out like most alcohol pads do. Love the fact these are natural.

Product Change: please be aware that the product has changed significantly. I’ve used the ‘astringent pads’ for years and have been beyond pleased with the results!
Recently, I refreshed my supply and purchased 2 containers using my same supplier on amazon as i have consistently used for awhile now. I noticed something different immediately. The pads were more ‘squishy’ and when I used the first one, it rendered an unusual scent along with FOAMY residue. I thought I purchased the wrong product and actually wondered if it was a cleanser instead of just the witch hazel toner I had been so pleased with for years. I confirmed that the name of the product was the same.
I called the company and was told there was ‘no change to the formula.’ It was recommended that I try purchasing from Target as they contract directly with Thayer and this would rule out any possible mock product concerns.
I purchased the product at Target. Same results. I’ve tried continued use and am now seeing a severe reaction in the form of a red, irritating rash.
I have very sensitive skin which is why I chose this product and medium in the first place.
I then did some research and found that indeed others have reported similar experiences and results.
I highly recommend that we hold Thayer accountable for disclosing product formula changes. We rely on our tried and true products and trusted companies to be transparent and to allow us the opportunity to make our decisions based on fact and accurate information.
Very disappointed.

Hi Jennifer,
We are sorry to hear your recent experience with Thayers was not a pleasant one. While there has been no change in formula, we have adjusted the amount of Astringent added to the Astringent Pads to ensure there is no drying out. This could have been attributed to the squishy and foamy residue you were experiencing. However, we apologize for the severe reaction your skin had with our product. We have a long standing commitment to creating pure and effective products but we recognize everyone’s skin is unique. Even after doing a test patch, skin can be unpredictable. If there is something we can do to turn your experience around, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] or contact 1-888-THAYER-1 (1-888-842-9371).

There has been a change in ingredients! The new containers now have phenoxyethanol! The “Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) on phenoxyethanol states that it can cause skin and lung irritation. It’s also toxic to the kidneys, nervous system, and liver, and repeated, long-term exposure can cause organ damage. It notes that toxic effects can occur through inhalation, skin exposure, and ingestion.”
Carolina @ Thayers –
Hi Kristin,
Thank you for reaching out to us, we appreciate you letting us know how you feel about the addition of Phenoxyethanol. Rest assured the inclusion of this natural preservative is entirely safe and necessary. Phenoxyethanol halts the growth of bacteria and microorganisms, and is safe to use at levels of 2.2% or lower. There is less than 1% of Phenoxyethanol in our products and it does not react with other ingredients, air or light, making it a very stable and effective preservative. If you have any further concerns, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or give us a call at 1-888-THAYER-1 (1-888-842-9371).

Within 3 days my face has started to breakout in small red itchy bumps and hasn’t gone away, even after 4 days of non use and Benadryl. Highly unsatisfied. Will NEVER buy again

Hi Jacqueline,
We would like to apologize for the poor reaction your skin had to our Astringent Pads. We have a long-standing commitment to creating pure and effective products but we recognize that everyone’s skin is unique. We always recommend patch testing when trying new products, especially those that are alcohol based, as we create a range of products that may not always be the most suitable option for every skin type. If you are willing to give Thayers another try, I would recommend our water based Facial Toners, as they are better suited for those with skin sensitivities. Let us know if you have any additional questions at [email protected] or give us a call at 1-888-THAYER-1 (1-888-842-9371).

I’m not sure why there are so many bad reviews on here. I love this product so much that it dramatically changed my skin. My face is so clean and I think it also has some effects on my blockheads. I noticed that target no longer has this product, I wonder why. But I do love this product dearly I use it every single day and I hope it’s not discontinued.

Be cautious with this product if you have sensitive skin. I use the bottled Thayers witch hazel facial toner in rose petal (alcohol free) twice a day as it was recommended by my dermatologist. I only have positive comments for the toner and using it in my skincare regimen my it has only improved my acne-prone, combination skin. I bought these pads on a whim from Target. I thought they were a smart idea to leave in my gym bag to replace my bottled toner after showering, as the toner bottle leaks in my bag when transported from home to the gym. I used this product two days ago and yesterday. My face burned immediately during and after use. This morning, my face has broken out in dry, scaly red hives. These pads have been the only change in my routine to explain this allergic reaction. My dermatologist told me to take Zyrtec and not apply anything on my face in the meantime to remedy this. A shame, I really wanted to love this product as I do the toner. If you have sensitive skin like me, test the pads out on a small area of skin first.

Beware! I tried this ONE time and had the WORST allergic reaction. My entire face broke out in a rash with blisters and peeling. I also experienced swelling and my eyes could barely open. I had to go to the urgent care to get steroids. I dont have sensitive skin and this still happened. Please be careful!

I agree with the complaints. After using this product for several days, my face turned beet red with an intense allergic reaction. I had been drawn to your company by promises that your products were designed for people like me, with sensitive skin. Now I am stuck with another bottle of this stuff, which I will be putting in the garbage. If these reactions, as shared by other customers, is caused by the addition of new ingredients, then you should go back to the old formula, asap.

Like other reviews, my face also broke out in hives. Then the hives turned into a rash, and bright red the next day. I had to go to urgent care so they could put me on medication. My skin is extremely scaly and dry. Never experienced anything like this, I do not have sensitive skin.
