THAYERS NATURAL BLOG

Let’s Talk Sustainable Palm Oil

We’re excited to announce that we recently reformulated our Rose Petal Body Bar* with Sustainable Palm Oil. The previous ingredient, regular palm oil, has social and environmental issues and didn’t fall in line with our commitment to creating pure, effective, cruelty-free products of the highest natural quality. We want to ensure that our products have ingredients that protect these values, which is why we had to make a change.

At Thayers, we are certified Roundtable or Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) members committed to their mission to produce, source and use sustainable palm oil in our products. The RSPO is a not-for-profit uniting stakeholders from the seven sectors of the palm oil industry, including consumer goods manufacturers, like us. They have developed a set of environmental and social criteria which we must comply with in order to produce Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). Our commitment aligns with their mission to minimize the negative impact of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities in palm oil producing regions.

The problem with Palm Oil is that it is in such high demand that the plantations are growing it at such an alarming rate. This means that vast areas of rainforest are being cut down to create more room for these areas of land, and that vital habitats are being destroyed, ecosystems are being wiped out and endangered species are being put at further risks.

In fact, animals such as the Sumatran and Bornean orangutan, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhino and Bornean and Sumatran elephant are facing major problems, all because of the global demand for Palm Oil. On top of this, the forests that are being destroyed also store huge amounts of carbon, and many stand on peat soils which hold massive additional carbon stocks that can be released when the forest is removed, which is bad news for the global fight against climate change.

In addition to animal protection, our cruelty-free commitment applies to the environment as well. It aligns with our own passionate belief that we need to do all that we can to preserve and protect our planet and the animals living on it. With this in mind, Sustainable Palm Oil was the only feasible option we had when reformulating our products. The oils we use are all carefully sourced from sustainable organic plantations, and in the case of palm oil from accredited organic, RSPO-certified sustainable plantations. This means that we are able to produce the most wholesome, organically enriched luxurious and lathery soaps possible and stay true to our mission at the same time.

*Our other body bars will soon be switching to sustainable palm oil too.

Whether or not sustainable, palm oil extraction demolishes forests and wildlife. This has been demonstrated factually by several scientific and environmental journals. Based on research published by Purdue University in Indiana, https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/palm-oil-sustainable-certified-plantations-orangutans-indonesia-southeast-asia-greenwashing-purdue-a8674681.html
palm-oil forests certified as sustainable are being destroyed faster than non-certified land, experts have found, in a study they say blows the lid on any claims that the oil can be destruction-free.
