Acne Awareness Month: The Best Acne Fighting Ingredients for Your Skin

Acne-Fighting Ingredients For Your Skin

Pimples…we’ve all gotten them at some point. For some, an unwelcome zit can be annoying, but for others, the uphill battle to clear skin can be emotionally exhausting and distressing. In honor of Acne Awareness Month, we’re walking you through the best acne fighting ingredients found in our Blemish Collection, tailored for those who have to fight acne and blemishes on the daily.

Ingredient: Salicylic Acid

If there’s one ingredient you should have in your acne fighting regimen, it’s this acid. Salicylic acid belongs to a family of acids known as BHA’s, or Beta Hydroxy Acids. This naturally occurring compound can be found in the bark of the willow tree. It’s the most common ingredient you’ll see in acne fighting products due to its oil soluble properties, which make it a perfect choice for those with oily and blemish prone skin.

How does it work?

Salicylic acid works by penetrating the skin and goes to work within your pores to dissolve any acne causing bacteria, as well as excess oil and dead skin cell buildup. Salicylic Acid targets major skin concerns like acne, excess sebum production, enlarged pores and dull skin. While it’s labeled an acid, it’s considered gentle enough for all skin types which makes it a popular choice for those with mild to moderate acne. Thayers Blemish Clearing Collection contains maximum strength 2% Salicylic Acid in each product which is just the right amount to fight acne flare ups, while also preventing future breakouts from forming.

Ingredient: Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil is an essential oil that is derived from the native Australian Tea Tree. Long used as a traditional medicine, this natural healer has been used for many purposes, ranging from insect bites, to athletes’ feet, and of course, acne.

How does it work?

Tea Tree oil contains anti inflammatory, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. These properties make it effective in keeping skin healthy and functioning properly. It works against a strain of bacteria known as Cutibacterium acnes, which is the culprit behind acne. In addition, tea tree oil can reduce inflammation, calm redness and relieve irritated skin caused by blemishes. Thanks to its antiseptic properties, tea tree oil naturally sterilizes and effectively kills any dirt and bacteria accumulating within your pores, making it a potent acne fighting ingredient found in Thayers Blemish Clearing products.

Ingredient: Lemongrass Extract

Lemongrass extract comes from the Cymbopogon Citratus plant, and can be found in culinary to cosmetic uses. This vitamin rich plant is what gives our Blemish Clearing products their fragrant lemon scent, while also helping to fight off blemishes.

How does it work?

Citral, a chemical compound found within Lemongrass extract, is excellent at fighting off fungal and skin infections. Lemongrass also contains natural astringent properties, which help minimize the appearance of pores and firm the epidermis. The antiseptic, antimicrobial and antifungal properties of Lemongrass make it an ideal ingredient to include in acne banishing products. The lemon-like scent from Thayers Blemish products as well actually comes from the lemongrass extract! It serves its purpose as an acne fighter while also giving our Blemish Collection its invigorating lemon scent.

Ingredient: Witch Hazel

The hero ingredient found in all our red cap products, Witch Hazel or Hamamelis Virginiana is a flowering shrub found in the United States. Witch Hazel has been prized as a natural remedy by Native Americans when they discovered its soothing properties for bug bites, abrasions and other skin irritations.

How does it work?

Witch Hazel contains tannins, which are naturally occurring substances within the bark of the witch hazel that contain antioxidant, anti inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These tannins are also what give witch hazel their astringent like qualities, which are effective in reducing the amount of oil on the surface of skin. These natural tannins can reduce inflammation of the skin, reduce oil levels and in turn reduce the amount of acne causing bacteria.

Ingredient: Aloe Vera

This botanical plant is a favorite in the skincare industry and for good reason. Aloe Vera’s soothing gel is known to heal and relieve skin ailments and irritations such as sunburn and acne scars, which makes it a must have ingredient for optimal skin health.

How does it work?

The gel-like substance within the Aloe Vera plant contains vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that make it a natural solution to acne and other skin inflammations. Within our time honored Thayers formulas, certified organic Aloe Vera adds moisturizing and soothing benefits to skin. People dealing with mild to moderate acne can benefit from the aloe vera found in our Blemish Clearing Collection as it also contains salicylic acid amongst its other properties.
